Learn About Skin, Brain, and Bladder Cancer Prevention & Support
Local Events-
- Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells, most commonly caused by UV exposure from the sun or tanning beds. It is the most common cancer in the U.S., with 1 in 5 Americans developing it. The main types are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and the more dangerous melanoma.
- Brain cancerinvolves the uncontrolled growth of cells in the brain, forming malignant tumors that can be primary (starting in the brain) or secondary/metastatic (spreading from elsewhere, which is more common).
- Bladder cancer is a common malignancy that begins in the cells lining the inside of the bladder, often causing blood in the urine, pain, and frequent urination.

Warning signs of Skin Cancer often involve:
Skin cancer often has no symptoms in early stages but can be identified by changes in the skin.
Such as:
- Melanoma, which can be a new spot, or an existing mole that changes size, shape, or color. Be sure to use the ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter (often >6mm), or Evolving.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma is a pearly or waxy bump, often on the face, neck, or ears.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma is a firm, red bump or a flat lesion with a scaly, crusted surface.- Brain cancer symptoms depend on the tumor's location, size, and growth rate, often causing increased intracranial pressure or nerve dysfunction. Key symptoms includenew or worsening headaches (often worse in the morning), seizures, unexplained nausea/vomiting, vision/hearing issues, personality changes, and weakness in arms or leg
- Bladder cancer symptoms often includeblood in the urine (hematuria), which may appear rusty or red, along with frequent, painful, or urgent urination. These symptoms, which may also include pelvic or back pain, often mimic common issues like infections, making prompt evaluation by a healthcare provider essential for early diagnosis
These symptoms don't always mean cancer, but it's crucial to see a healthcare provider if you notice any new, changing, or non-healing spot that persists for two weeks or more.

Skin Cancer prevention would consist of:
- protecting your skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation daily. Key measures include using broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+), wearing protective clothing (hats, sunglasses), seeking shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and avoiding tanning beds.Brain Cancer prevention:
- While there are no guarantees in proventing brain tumors, you can reduce your risk by minimizing exposure to ionizing radiation, avoiding environmental toxins, protecting your head from injury, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a nutrient-rich diet, regular exercise, and limiting alcohol and tobacco use.Bladder Cancer prevention:
- Preventing bladder cancer involves reducing exposure to toxins, mainly by quitting smoking(responsible for half of all cases), staying hydrated to flush the bladder, and limiting chemical exposure at work. Adopting a healthy, plant-rich diet and minimizing arsenic intake also lower risks. At least 50% of cases are preventable through lifestyle changes.
