Learn About Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Prevention & Support
Local Events-
Sarcoma is a rare and complex type of cancer that originates in the body's connective and supportive tissues, such as bones, muscles, tendons, fat, and blood vessels. It differs from common cancers (carcinomas) because it develops in supporting structures rather than in organs or the linings of the skin. They occur when DNA in healthy bone or soft tissue cells mutates, causing cells to grow uncontrollably and form tumors.

Bone cancer is a rare type of tumor that begins when cells in the bone grow out of control, damaging healthy tissue. It is distinct from metastatic bone cancer, which is cancer that originated elsewhere (like the breast or lungs) and spread to the bone. Bone cancer usually starts in the long bones of the arms and legs—specifically the femur (thigh bone) or tibia (shin bone) near the knee, as well as the pelvic bones
Common Types
Osteosarcoma: The most common type, frequently developing in children and adolescents in the arms, legs, or pelvis.
Chondrosarcoma: Cancer that starts in the cartilage; most common in adults over 40.
Ewing’s Sarcoma: Often found in children and teens, originating in the bone or nearby soft tissue
-
Sarcoma symptoms depend heavily on the tumor's location. Due to soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas affecting connective tissues, tumors often grow quite large before pressing on nerves or muscles to cause pain.
Common, localized, and systemic indicators include:
Noticeable Lumps: A new, firm lump or swelling. Warning signs include a mass larger than a golf ball, growing over time, or feeling painful and deep under the skin.
Bone/Limb Discomfort:Deep, persistent bone pain, joint swelling, or a noticeable limp. Fractures that occur with minor or no clear cause can also signal bone sarcoma.
Abdominal/Visceral Issues:Stomach or back pain that won't go away, a bloated belly, or a feeling of fullness. In rare cases, bloody stools or abnormal vaginal bleeding can occur.
Nerve Compression:Tingling, numbness, or weakness in a limb if the tumor presses against a nerve
Systemic Changes:Unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, or loss of appetite.

The most common symptom of bone cancer is persistent, deep, or aching bone pain that worsens at night, does not improve with rest, and gets progressively more intense over time. Other symptoms include unexplained swelling or a firm lump near the bone, weakened bones that fracture easily, and limited mobility
-
Currently, there is no guaranteed way to prevent sarcoma, as most cases occur sporadically in individuals with no known risk factors. While lifestyle changes are less directly linked to sarcomas than to other cancers, you can minimize your risk byavoiding recognized environmental hazards and seeking prompt medical attention for unusual symptoms.
>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<
Primary bone cancer has no known lifestyle-related or environmental causes, meaning it cannot be completely prevented. However, you can actively reduce certain secondary risks and promote skeletal health byeating a nutrient-rich diet, limiting radiation exposure, avoiding tobacco, and scheduling routine medical check-ups.
